Crop an image

Cut out the part of a photo or image you need. Choose an aspect ratio such as 1:1 or 16:9, or enter the exact area in pixels.

Files you select are processed in your browser on this device. They are never uploaded to or stored on our server. For how analytics are handled, see the Privacy Policy.

How to use

  1. Choose a photo or image with "Choose an image" (or drag and drop it).
  2. Pick an aspect ratio: free, original, 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and more.
  3. Drag the frame to position it and drag the corner or edge handles to resize it. You can also type X, Y, width and height in pixels.
  4. Choose a format and quality, press "Crop image", check the result and press "Save image" to download it.

Supported formats and limits

  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG and WebP, one image at a time. HEIC, GIF and BMP are not supported.
  • Images up to 30 MB and about 50 megapixels can be opened. If the cropped area is larger than about 16 megapixels, it is scaled down with the same aspect ratio when saved.
  • There is no automatic face detection or background removal.
  • Saving as JPEG fills transparent areas with white. Choose PNG to keep transparency.
  • Saved images generally do not include Exif data such as the date taken or location.

How it works

The orientation recorded by phone cameras (Exif rotation) is applied when the image is loaded, and the crop area is measured on the upright image.

With a fixed ratio, a corner handle keeps the opposite corner in place and an edge handle keeps the opposite edge in place while the ratio is maintained. The area is always kept inside the image.

The cropped area is saved at its original pixel size, without scaling. The drawing area is kept inside the image to avoid a Safari issue where out-of-bounds areas are not drawn.

FAQ

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Loading, cropping and saving all happen in the browser on your device.

How do I make a square profile picture?

Choose "1:1 (square)", move the frame over the face and press "Crop image". To make it smaller in pixels, resize the cropped image with the image resizer.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Move the frame and drag the handles with your finger. For precise values, use the number fields.

Can I see the exact pixel size of the crop?

Yes. The selection size is shown below the image, and the X, Y, width and height fields always show the current area in pixels of the original image.
