Image Color Picker

Click a point on an image to get its color as HEX, RGB and HSL. A magnifier helps you hit the exact pixel, and up to 8 main colors are extracted automatically.

You can also copy an image and paste it on this page (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V).

Files you select are processed in your browser on this device. They are never uploaded to or stored on our server. For how analytics are handled, see the Privacy Policy.

How to use

  1. Choose an image with "Choose an image". You can also drag and drop it, or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V / Cmd+V.
  2. Move the pointer over the image to see the surrounding pixels in the 11 × 11 magnifier. For small details, set the zoom to 2× to 8×.
  3. Click or tap the point you want. The HEX, RGB and HSL values appear, each with its own Copy button.
  4. With a keyboard, focus the image, move the cursor with the arrow keys and press Enter to pick.
  5. Picked colors stay in History (up to 20). The image’s main colors are listed under Main colors with their share.

Supported formats and limits

  • Supported formats: JPEG, PNG and WebP, one image at a time. HEIC, GIF and BMP are not supported.
  • Images with a long edge over 4,096 px or more than about 16 megapixels are read from a reduced copy, so colors at fine details or edges may differ slightly from the original.
  • Values are read after the browser converts the image for display (sRGB). Images with embedded color profiles may show slightly different numbers than an image editor.
  • Semi-transparent pixels are shown with their opacity (alpha). HEX then has 8 digits (the last two are the opacity), and the color values can be off by about 1 because of how browsers store transparent pixels.
  • Main colors are approximations from a copy reduced to at most 160 px, with similar colors grouped. The exact value may not appear in the image.
  • History is not saved. It is cleared when you close or reload the page.

How it works

The image is drawn on a working canvas. The click position is converted from the on-screen size to canvas pixel coordinates, and that pixel’s RGBA value is read. The same pixel is chosen at every zoom level.

HSL is calculated from RGB and rounded to whole numbers.

Main colors use k-means clustering into 8 groups on pixels that are at least 50% opaque. The starting colors are chosen from the most frequent colors, so the same image always gives the same result. The share is the fraction of pixels in each group.

FAQ

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. Loading the image, picking colors and extracting the main colors all happen in your browser on your device.

Why is the value slightly different from Photoshop?

Embedded color profiles and the handling of semi-transparent pixels can cause small differences. This tool reads the values the browser draws in sRGB.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tap the image to pick the color at that point. For small areas, raise the zoom and check the magnifier before tapping.

Is the history cleared when I open another image?

No. History stays while the page is open, so you can collect and compare colors from several images. Use "Clear history" to remove them.

How do I check a color in a screenshot?

Copy the screenshot to the clipboard and paste it on this page with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. It loads straight away.
