Meta tag generator (title, description, Open Graph)

Create title, meta description, canonical, robots, Open Graph and X (Twitter) card tags, and see an approximate search result and social card preview.

Basics

Search engine instructions (robots)

When both are on, that is the default behavior, so no robots tag is written.

Open Graph (how the page looks when shared)

Use an absolute https:// URL, ideally for an image of about 1200 × 630 px. This page does not load the image from that URL.

X (Twitter) card

Preview (approximate)

Real search results and social cards differ by search engine, platform, device and font. Text widths are rough estimates, and search engines sometimes show text from the page instead of your description.

How to use

  1. Enter the title, description and canonical URL. An approximate width check appears as you type.
  2. If needed, set robots (for example noindex), Open Graph and X card fields. Empty Open Graph fields fall back to the title, description and canonical URL.
  3. Press "Copy HTML" and paste the tags inside the <head> of your page. Check the search result and social card previews below.

Notes and limits

  • Previews are approximations. Real search results and social cards depend on the search engine, platform, device and font, and search engines sometimes show text from the page instead of your description.
  • Widths are rough estimates for a typical sans-serif font. The limits of about 600 px for titles and 920 px for descriptions are commonly cited rules of thumb, not official numbers.
  • The image at your og:image URL is not loaded on this page (no external requests). To see an image in the preview, you can choose a local file; it is not added to the code.
  • The robots tag tells search engines whether to show the page. It does not block access to the page.

How it works

Every value is escaped for HTML attributes (& < > " and ' become character references) before it is written. Line breaks and repeated spaces are collapsed into one space.

index and follow are the defaults, so no robots tag is written when both are on. Turning one off writes, for example, "noindex, follow".

Empty Open Graph title, description and URL fall back to the title, description and canonical URL. X reads Open Graph values, so with Open Graph on only twitter:card and twitter:site are added.

Text width is estimated per character: narrow letters such as i and l count less, wide letters such as m and W count more, and Korean, Japanese and Chinese characters count as one full em.

FAQ

Can I generate a meta keywords tag?

No. Major search engines do not use meta keywords for ranking, so the tool leaves it out.

How long should a title be?

Search results cut titles by width, not character count. Around 50 to 60 characters is a common guide for English, but it varies, so put the important words first.

My Open Graph image does not show when I share the page.

Check that og:image is an absolute https:// URL and that the image is public. Platforms cache previews, so you may need their debugging tool to fetch the page again.

Is what I type sent anywhere?

No. The tags and previews are created in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
