Time between a start and end time
Add and subtract hours and minutes
How to use
- In "Time between a start and end time", enter the start and end times and the break in minutes to see the time worked.
- In "Add and subtract hours and minutes", enter hours and minutes on each row. Switch "+" to "−" on rows you want to subtract, and use "Add row" for more rows.
- Each result is shown four ways: hours and minutes, h:mm, total minutes and decimal hours.
Notes and limits
- If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is treated as the next day (for night shifts). Spans longer than 24 hours cannot be entered.
- Times are rounded to the nearest whole minute.
- The tool does not calculate pay, overtime, night premiums or legally required breaks. Those rules differ by country and employer.
How it works
All times are converted to minutes, calculated, and then converted back to hours and minutes.
"1 h 30 min" and "1.5 h" are the same length of time. Decimal hours are minutes ÷ 60, shown to two decimal places (20 min = 0.33 h). If you use decimal hours for payroll, check the rounding rule your employer uses.
