How to reduce an image to under 200 KB

Make a photo fit an upload limit such as 200 KB: compress to a target size, resize when needed, check the result and fix files that stay too large.

When you need this

Application forms, job sites and online shops often reject images above a size such as 200 KB. A phone photo is typically several megabytes, so it needs both lower JPEG quality and, often, fewer pixels.

Example

  • Input: IMG_2048.jpg, a 4032 × 3024 phone photo of about 3 MB
  • Goal: a JPEG of 200 KB or less for a form

Step by step

  1. Open the image compressor and choose the photo (or drag it onto the page). You can select up to 20 images at once.
  2. Leave Compression method on Target size (KB) and choose 200KB under Target file size. For another limit, choose Custom and type a number.
  3. Keep Reduce the pixel size too if needed turned on. Without it, a very large photo may not reach 200 KB at any acceptable quality.
  4. Optionally set Maximum size (longer edge) — for a profile or ID-style photo, 1200–1600 px is usually plenty.
  5. Compare Before and After, check File size and Pixel size in the result, then press Save image (or Save all as ZIP for several files).

How the target size is reached

The tool first tries the highest quality that fits. If the file is still too large, it searches for the highest JPEG quality that stays under the target, and only if that is not enough does it reduce the pixel size as well. The result is the largest file that is still within your limit.

200 KB here means 200,000 bytes. Some systems count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes (so 200 KB = 204,800 bytes). Using the smaller number means the file is accepted under either rule.

Quality mode instead of a target

If you do not have a size limit and just want a smaller file, choose Set quality and move the Quality slider. 70–85 is a common range for photos. PNG is lossless, so it has no quality setting: to make a PNG smaller, reduce its pixel size, or save it as JPEG or WebP if you do not need transparency.

Common problems

  • “The image cannot be made this small.” The tool shows the smallest size it reached. Allow pixel reduction, choose a larger target, or crop away unneeded parts first with the image cropper.
  • The result is larger than the original. This can happen with images that were already heavily compressed. Use the original, or lower the quality or maximum size.
  • The form requires a specific pixel size (for example 600 × 800). Resize first with the image resizer, then compress.
  • The form only accepts JPG. Keep Save as on JPEG. WebP is smaller but not accepted everywhere.
  • The picture is rotated. The tool applies the camera’s rotation information before saving, so the saved image appears the same way up as in your photo app. Location and other metadata are not copied.
